t’s t’s important important to to have an an an end goal in in mind but it’s more important important to to to love the journey while on your way towards that goal When I I I I I look at at training I I I I I have an an end goal of a a a a a a a a perfect physique that I’m striving for and and once I I I I I I get it I I I I I I will then happy That’s not how I I I I I I look at at at at training and and bodybuilding I I I I know there’s no no no perfect physique that I’m trying to to to get to to to It’s like an an an an asymptote which is when a a a a a a a a a line line approaches another line line and and gets closer closer and and closer closer but never quite touches it (see picture below) (Find a a Function’s Horizontal Asymptote 2016)
There’s no end goal of of a a perfect physique but I love the journey of of striving for it In life you can’t focus on on on the goal of of getting getting a a a a a a promo- tion at work or or or or getting getting a a a a a a a a lot of of money or or or or a a a a a a a a big house or or or or an expensive car if you don’t love the journey to to get get to to it If you’re you’re the the the kind of of person that looks at at your your week week and in in in the the the middle of of the the the week week you’re you’re saying to yourself “3 more more days days until until it’s it’s Friday!” Friday!” Friday!” “2 more more days days until until it’s it’s Friday!” Friday!” Friday!” “It’s finally Friday!” Friday!” Friday!” If you you you you do not love your your “everyday life ” ” ” ” you’re setting yourself up to to be be unhappy There’s no no “oh I’ll be be happy happy happy eventually”You have to to to love that that journey of of getting to that goal of being happy happy It’s like the the person person who hates running and says to another person person person “I gained ten years on on on on my life because I I I ran everyday ” ” Then the the the other other person person says “Yea but you you spent your life running ” ” If you you you don’t love love running running is extending your life 10 more years worth it? Now if if you you you you love love running running that’s a a a a a a a perfect situation because you’re loving that that that that daily grind of of getting to that that that that goal of of living another 10 years (that’s obviously
not not a a a a a a a a a a a a a scientific fact that that that i if you you you run everyday you you you will live 10 10 extra years it’s it’s just meant to help explain my point) If you you you love love running running and and love love that daily grind then it’s it’s absolutely worth worth it it But if if you you hate hate running running and and hate hate your “day to day day ” is that 10 years worth worth a a a a a a a lifetime of unhappiness?
So yes set high goals goals for for yourself Set long-term goals goals Have dreams Just don’t forget to to to love love the the means to to to your your end You have to to love love the journey When you you love the the journey you you won’t struggle to find will power From the the the the outside looking fin in in in our our way of life may seem like a a a a a a sacrifice but not to the the the the ones doing the the the the sacrificing so long as we love the the journey “When a a a a a a a a a a person has a a a a a a a a a a vision that that that transcends himself that that that focuses on on on on on an an an important cause or or project that that that he he he he is is emotionally connected to to then the the real course of least resistance is is is to to to put service above self To To such a a a a a a a a a a person it it is is is is no sacrifice sacrifice To To an an outside observer it it would appear to to be be be a a a a a a a a a a a sacrifice sacrifice sacrifice because he he he is is is is denying some present good Rather than being the the the course course of of most resistance resistance sacrifice sacrifice is is is is is the the the course course of of lease resistance resistance to to one who is is is is deeply spiritu- ally ally and emotionally connected to to a a a a a a a a a a cause or or a a a a a a a a a a calling or or the the serving of another ” (Covey 2004 p 317) Find Find a a a a a a a a a journey that that you’re passionate about and is true to your your core values Find Find that that beautiful intersection between your your talents skills passion and and conscience and and use use it to help people Leave a a a a a a a a a a a legacy of meaningful con- tribution that that makes the world better because you you you were here If you you you you love that that grind I I think your your going to be be be much happier in in in in striving for your your goals n n n n n Dr Nicholas M Licameli PT PT DPT
